Content Knowledge Books

These books have helped me learn the content knowledge that elementary school teachers are required to know and teach. There are also a few teacher certification test prep books that I found especially helpful when taking the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTELs).

  • Beating Them All! Thirty Days to a Magic Score on Any Elementary Literacy Instruction Exam for Teacher Certification by Chris Boosalis (test prep: MTEL foundations of reading)
  • A History of Us: Ten-Volume Set by Joy Hakim
  • What Your Fifth Grader Needs to Know: Fundamentals of a Good Fifth-Grade Education by ED Hirsch (test prep: MTEL general curriculum) [these books range from kindergarten to 6th grade]
  • Phonics, Phonemic Awareness, and Word Analysis for Teachers by Donald Leu & Charles Kinzer (test prep: MTEL foundations of reading)
  • Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your US History Textbook Got Wrong by James Loewen
  • The Elements of Style by William Strunk & EB White
  • Afghanistan to Zimbabwe: Country Facts That Helped Me Win the National Geographic Bee by Andrew Wojtanik
  • Everything You Need to Know About Science Homework: A Desk Reference for Students and Parents by Anne Zeman (test prep: MTEL general curriculum)
  • A People’s History of the United States by Howard Zinn*
