Teachers as Entertainers

“A good teacher, like a good entertainer, first must hold his audience’s attention, then he can teach his lesson.”

– John Henrick Clarke

I’ll be honest, I taught a disaster lesson in 5th grade. It’s a notoriously tough class, but I was ready (or so I thought). Well, turns out I wasn’t! Half way through the lesson, I realized it just wasn’t entertaining enough. Or maybe I should say it wasn’t engaging enough. It was well-thought and well-planned. But there wasn’t a huge hook. I find that kids need more “entertaining” lessons now. As teachers, we need to constantly be perfecting our craft – which includes being entertainers.
