What Teachers Make – Taylor Mali

It’s frustrating when I tell someone I’m studying to be a teacher, and their immediate response is, “You know you’re not going to make any money, right?” It is rude, condescending, and ignorant on so many different levels.  If anyone said this about a profession other than teaching, people would be mortified! However, it seems culturally acceptable to publicly ostracize teachers. The only argument here is that public school teachers are paid with tax dollars – just like the 8% of the population employed by the federal government.

That’s not even the worst part! When people make comments like this, I can only assume that they think my sole motivation is money.  If it was, I would have stayed in business school. Seriously, if you want to infuriate a schoolteacher, start talking about how they made a misinformed financial choice by becoming an educator.

Anyways, I LOVE LOVE LOVE this video (based on a poem by Taylor Mali). Next time someone starts trashing talking teachers’ salaries, I’ll direct them to this 🙂
